Each April we join colleagues across the nation in celebrating National County Government Month—a time to highlight the essential role counties play in the daily lives of our residents. This year, as the Washington State Association of Counties embraces the theme “We are WAcounties, 39 Counties Strong” we stand united with the National Association of Counties and its new “We Are Counties” campaign.
We know that Washington's 39 counties represent a remarkable diversity of geography, economy, and community spirit. We also share a fundamental common purpose: delivering services that matter to our residents. From maintaining roads and bridges to safeguarding public health, administering elections, supporting economic development, and providing critical human services, county government touches nearly every aspect of residents’ lives.
NACo’s "We Are Counties" initiative reminds us that while this work is vital, it is not always well-understood. We are being encouraged to tell our story more clearly and consistently, highlighting how counties serve as the foundation of local governance and community well-being. In Washington, that story is of course strengthened by collaboration through WSAC, which for more than a century has brought together commissioners, councilmembers, and executives to advocate, share knowledge, and advance solutions for our communities.
“We are WAcounties” is more than a slogan - it reflects the collective strength of all of counties working together to address complex challenges every day. It also reflects the power of a unified voice, ensuring that county priorities are heard at both the state and federal levels.
This year we are also proud to introduce a new tradition: the Civil Champion pin. This recognition honors county commissioners and councilmembers who exemplify dedication to public service, civility in leadership, and a commitment to their communities. At a time when public discourse can be challenging, this symbol serves as a reminder that respectful leadership and collaboration remain at the heart of effective governance.
As we kick off National County Government Month, let us recommit to telling our story. Share your county’s successes, highlight the people behind the work, and engage residents in understanding the value of county government. Whether through community events, social media, or conversations with constituents, every effort helps elevate the role counties play.
Together, we are more than individual jurisdictions—we are a network of public servants bound by a shared mission. Together, we are resilient, innovative, and dedicated.
Together, We Are WA Counties—39 Counties Strong.
