Washington State Association of Counties Names Derek Young Interim Executive Director

On Wednesday, March 27th, the Washington State Association of Counties’ (WSAC) Board of Directors selected former Pierce County Councilmember Derek Young as Interim Executive Director.

On Wednesday, March 27th, the Washington State Association of Counties’ (WSAC) Board of Directors selected former Pierce County Councilmember Derek Young as Interim Executive Director. Mr. Young will succeed Eric Johnson, who is stepping down on May 31, 2024.

Derek Young brings a wealth of experience to this crucial role. A familiar face within WSAC, he has served on the Board of Directors, co-chaired the WSAC Legislative Steering Committee, and chaired the Health Policy Steering Committee for the National Association of Counties.

It is very exciting to have Derek fill this key role at the Association,” stated WSAC President Lisa Janicki (Skagit County Commissioner). “His deep understanding of WSAC and our members, combined with his enthusiasm, innovative ideas, and optimism, ensures a bright future for all counties in Washington. Derek will serve as an excellent complement to the existing WSAC team.”  President Janicki added that Mr. Young will begin his role in mid-April, working alongside Executive Director Johnson to ensure a smooth transition.

President Janicki closed the WSAC Board of Directors’ meeting by both welcoming Derek into his new role and expressing her gratitude to the WSAC Executive Committee, Search Committee, and Director of Operations and Administration Bridget Lockling for their time, patience and thoughtful discussions culminating in Mr. Young’s selection.
