We reached out to the President of the Association of County Human Services (ACHS), Jess Nelson, Skagit County Developmental Disabilities Program Coordinator, to learn more about their affiliate group, what they do, and why it's important.
Question: Please introduce yourself. What's your county employment journey, your education, and hobbies or interests, Jess!
Answer: I am a passionate advocate for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, with over two decades of experience in the field. My background is in social work, and I am a graduate of Western Washington University, where I earned my degree in Human Services. I currently serve as the Developmental Disabilities Program Coordinator for Skagit County, a role I have held for the past four years.
My work extends beyond the office as I actively partner with county colleagues, state systems, school districts, community members, and self-advocates to promote inclusive communities where everyone has the opportunity to belong and thrive.
Outside of my professional life, I am a busy mom of three incredible children. I enjoy painting, singing, playing cribbage with my husband, and going on family adventures.
Question: Why did you get involved in the group? What do you see as the value the group offers?
Answer: Since joining the County, I have been actively involved with the ACHS Developmental Disabilities Committee, serving on several subcommittees including Leadership, DEI, Birth to Three, Data Systems, Community Inclusion, and Legislative.
Last year, I stepped into a greater leadership role as Vice President of ACHS. I was honored to be selected to serve as President this year, allowing me to further support this important work.
Question: Why did you choose to engage in a leadership role within this group? What has been your favorite part so far?
Answer: I am looking forward to strengthening the relationship between ACHS and WSAC as well as sharing more broadly the amazing work the Developmental Disabilities, Homelessness & Affordable Housing, Behavioral Health and Veterans programs are doing in the Counties.
Question: Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Answer: I look forward to strengthening the partnership between ACHS and WSAC, and to elevating the incredible work happening across counties in Developmental Disabilities, Homelessness and Affordable Housing, Behavioral Health, and Veterans programs.
